If it is July, this is a good time for those whose total itemized deductions are close to the standard deduction to review the timing of payments. You can save taxes by timing the payment of deductible expenses such as charitable donations and state taxes. Bundle them in one year and itemize deductions, and take standard deduction the next year.

A good first start is to locate last year's tax return. Have there been any major changes in your life? Make a checklist of what you need, such as W-2 and 1099 R forms, interest and dividend income, medical, dental and prescription expenses, child care costs, home sale or purchase documents as well as mortgage and property tax statements, business expenses, pension and retirement information.
